Case 2 – diabetes

You see a 45 year old lady with type 2 diabetes. She has attended diabetes eye screening and has since received a letter to attend the local eye department for further investigation. She says her vision is fine, but she is terrified as her mum went blind from diabetes. She wants to talk about what she can do to reduce her risk of going blind.

  1. How many of the following are NOT important factors in diabetic eye disease?
    • Duration of diabetes
    • Cholesterol / Statins
    • Blood Pressure / Antihypertensives
    • HbA1c
    • Obesity
    • Aspirin
    • Smoking
    • Pregnancy
    • Chronic Kidney Disease
    • Attending retinopathy screening
  2. Where is local diabetic screening undertaken? How Often?
  3. How is screening undertaken? What happens?
  4. What is the difference between diabetic maculopathy and proliferative retinopathy? Are they treated the same way?
  5. Does this lady need to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)?
